Post International Greyhound Planet Day Event - updated Oct 23rd Reply with quote
Saturday, October 27th has been proclaimed Greyhound Planet Day in the City of Ottawa.

Bring your dogs and come help us celebrate at our 3rd Annual Greyhound Planet Day Event taking place at Christ Church Cathedral Hall which is located at 420 Sparks Street (at Bronson). Free parking is available beside the Church.

Greyhound Planet is a time chosen each year to honor the greyhound and its relatives (galgos, lurchers, etc.) throughout the world. Bring the whole family (two and four-legged members) and meet some retired racing greyhounds up close and chat with their adoptive families. Learn more about these canine athletes, have a bite to eat, hang out and have some fun.

Join us for a greyhound walk along Wellington Street from Lyon Street to Elgin Street and back again. It is not necessary to collect pledges to participate, but if you’d like to obtain a pledge form, please contact Laura Simmermon at info@gsncr.ca. The walk will start at 9:30am.

The Reverend Canon William J. Fairlie will do a Blessing of the hounds and the Rainbow Memorial Bridge just prior to the departure of the walk participants at 9:30am.

Vendors and Services

Get your Christmas shopping started by visiting the many vendor booths that will be on-site. There will be all kinds of dog-related items, such as dog collars (both martingale and buckle styles), dog necklaces and collar blings, doggy sweaters and coats, doggy biscuits, stuffies, doggy beds and other accoutrements.

In addition to doggie goodies, there will be things for the humans in your family too - jewellery, art work, greyhound beanies, clothing, chocolate covered apples, and more.

Some of the vendors that will be on-site include: Barking Biscuit Company, Casual Bling, Chien Lounge, Chilly Dogs, Critter Cozies, Exceptionally Gifted, Greyt Inspirations, Hounds-R-Us, League of Extraordinary Greyhounds, Paws for Charity, The House of Earl, The Pawstry Chef, and more.

Joan Tremblay and Sandra Powell of LifeSteam Animal Blood Bank will be on location to speak about canine blood donations, transfusions and their blood donor program. Make sure to let us know if you'd like to have your greyhound involved in this very worthwhile endeavour.

Drop into our exclusive "Paw Salon" where, for a small fee, your canine companion can have their toe nails clipped and for an extra-special touch - some toe nail polish added. The nail polish has been donated by the Siurna family in memory of their greyhound Xena, who loved to get her nails done.

Sandy Benoit of Canine Touch and Tell will also be onsite to give canine massages for a small fee.

Canine Health

We have two fabulous canine health seminars scheduled. Check www.gsncr.ca for the times of each talk. Catherine Lane of The Possible Canine will be talking about canine nutrition, and Kimberly Swan of Helping Hands Equine and Canine Massage will present a talk about canine massage therapy, the various types of massage and their benefits.

At various times through the day, you can drop in to our "Ask the Expert Corner" and ask about health care issues, canine massage, greyhound adoption and more. Some of our experts will include Dr. Daren Auger of Blair Animal Hospital; Kimberly Swan of Helping Hands Equine and Canine Massage; Cara-Lea Suttie of Needle Nose Greyhound Adoptions and Donna Deskin from The League of Extraordinary Greyhounds.

Check out the various information boards to learn about greyhounds and many of their relatives. Learn about the Race for Adoption Program, a program in which active racing greyhounds race for the direct support of adoption groups and you can read all about Follow That Hound - a greyhound pre-adoption program. You can also learn about canine cancer and tick-borne diseases. Don’t forget to read all about Find-A Grey, a greyhound "lost and found" initiative.

Contests and Raffles

Don't forget to enter your dog into our Canine Halloween Costume Parade and Contest. We'll have prizes for the best costumed canine. The parade and contest is scheduled for 2:30pm.

There will be two series of on-site raffles, one in the morning and the other later in the afternoon. There’ll be doggy-related items as well as fabulous things for humans of all kinds too! The raffle results are scheduled for 12:00pm and 2:45pm.

Two series of canine contests will also be taking place, with prizes to be awarded for dogs with the smallest waist, or longest tail, tallest dog, etc. The morning contests are scheduled for approximately 11:00am and the afternoon contests will take place at approximately 2:00pm.

Rainbow Bridge Memorial

Visit our Rainbow Bridge Memorial and light a votive candle in memory of a beloved pet that has passed away. Please bring a photo of your pet to include it on our memorial board.

If you get hungry, we’ll have hot dogs and drinks available for purchase, as well as lots of homemade goodies through our bake sale.

Funds raised at the 3rd International Greyhound Planet Day will go to support canine tick-borne disease research.

Who can attend?

This is an event designed for doggies of all kinds and their human companions, although we do require that all canine attendees be on lead at all times. There will be a $5.00/family entrance fee.

Visit our website at www.gsncr.ca for more information.

We look forward to seeing you on Saturday
