Responsible Dog Owners of Canada (formerly NCCPD) |
|
Last night at the AGM, the membership ratified the new name for the organization known as National Capital Coalition for People and Dogs. The organization will adopt the name "Responsible Dog Owners of Canada" in accordance with its new focus on education and responsible dog ownership. An application will be made to Industry Canada to change the name very soon.
There is a lot of work to do in educating both the members of the dog owning community and the non dog owning community. We have too many irresponsible dog owners who are giving all responsible dog owners a bad name and we have a lot of folks who have been swept up in the media/politician induced hysteria about dogs that are lying in wait to eat our children.
Ontario now has a breed ban on several breeds and the addition of other breeds like Rottweilers, Akitas, GSDs, Dobermans and others is a very real possibility. Italy currently has 91 breeds on its prohibited/restricted list. Other cities are looking at restricting dogs by their size, i.e. only dogs under 100 pounds in urban areas.
As most reponsible dog owners already know, it is not the breed of dog but rather who is at the other end of the leash that is responsible for whether a dog is sociable, well-behaved and a welcome member of society. It is time to become proactive rather than reactive. We need to educate, educate, educate! Please consider becoming involved.
